Plan 01

1 day at Male Mahadeshwara Hills

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple and forest road

Start from Kollegal or Hanur early so you climb the hairpin road in daylight. Reach the temple in the morning, queue for darshan on a weekday if possible, and take a simple vegetarian lunch from a local eatery. Leave before late afternoon, because elephants use the forest stretch and the road is better not driven after dark.

Plan 02

2 days at Male Mahadeshwara Hills

  1. 01

    Day 1: Temple and stay

Arrive in the morning, visit the temple and see the smaller Rangana Oddu and Navagraha temples if time allows. Settle into a pre-booked guest house and take an evening walk in the town.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Forest and river

Take the road down in daylight and detour towards the Cauvery sanctuary, with a stop at Palar and Gopinatham before returning to Kollegal.

Plan 03

3 days at Male Mahadeshwara Hills

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrival and temple

Travel from Mysuru or Bengaluru by road, reach the town in the afternoon and visit the temple in the evening.

  2. 02

Day 2: A slower day on the hills

Take a quiet morning, then ask locally about walking to the nearby temples. Treks to Naagamale Betta need prior forest department permission; do not attempt them without it.

  3. 03

Day 3: Down to the Cauvery

Leave early, drive down the hairpin road and continue towards the Cauvery valley and Hogenakkal side before returning to your base.

Pacing

Pacing a Male Mahadeshwara Hills trip for parents and children

  • Drive up in daylight and leave before dusk; the road has many hairpin bends and elephants use the forest stretch.
  • Avoid Maha Shivaratri, Deepavali and weekend rushes if you are travelling with elders; weekdays are much quieter.
  • Book guest houses well in advance; they are run by institutions and fill quickly in festival periods.
  • Carry water, any medication, a torch and snacks; facilities are limited and phone coverage is patchy.
  • Do not attempt the foot pilgrimage or forest treks without local advice; the climb is long and steep.
  • Keep a spare day for road closures or weather.
