Malé Fish Market and Local Market, Malé: What to buy and visitor guide

The waterfront market where the tuna catch is landed and sold, with a fruit and vegetable market across the road. It is the most lively half hour in the city, and not for everyone.

Why it matters

Why Malé Fish Market and Local Market is worth your time

Tuna is the one food the Maldives truly produces for itself, and this is where you see why that matters. Fishing was the country's main way of life long before the first resort opened, and the fish that comes across this road still ends up in the broths, snacks and pastes that define Maldivian cooking.

For an Indian vegetarian family, it also explains the kitchen you are about to deal with: this is why dried tuna appears in dishes that look vegetable-based, and why you need to ask questions at every meal. A visit here makes that advice easier to take seriously, and provides a clearer picture of ordinary life than any resort offers.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The dhonis

Traditional boats moor across the road and unload the catch in plain view.

  2. 02

    The cutting tables

Watching a large tuna being prepared is the memory most people take away.

  3. 03

    Local Market

Compact and easier-going, it sells green coconuts, spices and small sweet snacks.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start on the seafront, where the dhonis tie up opposite the market and unload. Fish is carried across the road, then cleaned and cut up on the spot in the hall. It is impressive, it is wet, and it smells exactly as you imagine, so it is worth a word with the family first. Vegetarian relatives need not go in: the boats and the seafront show plenty from outside.

Then cross to the Local Market, a calmer and more comfortable stop. It is small and sells fruit and vegetables, Maldivian dried fish, spices, green coconuts and snacks made from sesame, rice and peanuts. Vegetarians can buy fruit and coconuts here. Ask what goes into anything packaged, since fish may turn up where you would not expect it.

Keep your phone away from water, and do not block the workers' path. Both markets are a short walk from Republic Square, so combine them with the Islamic Centre, then return to your hotel before the afternoon heat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Wear closed shoes with good grip
  • Warn vegetarian family members about what they will see
  • Ask before photographing people at work
  • Check whether packaged snacks contain fish
