Why it matters

Why Bhrigu Lake Trek is worth your time

Bhrigu Lake is one of the highest lakes that can be reached in a short trek from Manali, and the walk to it crosses wide, open meadows above the Kullu valley.

It is also a sacred lake, linked by legend to the sage Bhrigu. Treat it as a place of worship: do not bathe or wash in it, and carry all litter back down.

Because the trailhead at Gulaba is a short drive from Manali, the whole trek fits into a few days of a stay in town.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Most groups drive about 21 km from Manali up the Rohtang road to Gulaba, then walk a short way to the Gulaba meadows (about 3,200 m) to camp. The next day is about 6 km of steady climbing through meadows to Rola Kholi (about 3,800 m), the high camp.

On the third day the group walks about 5 km up to Bhrigu Lake, at roughly 4,200 to 4,300 m (about 14,000 ft), and returns to Rola Kholi. The last day descends to Gulaba and drives back to Manali. Total walking is about 29 km. A steeper route climbs from Vashisht instead, but most operators use Gulaba.

The lake is small and can still be frozen early in summer. Weather changes quickly at this height, so start early on lake day and turn back if cloud or rain closes in.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book with an operator or registered guide who arranges permits
  • Spend a night in Manali before starting to acclimatise
  • Start lake day early
  • Carry warm layers and rain gear
  • Do not bathe in or pollute the lake
