The short answer
Best areas to stay in Manali
- 01
Mall Road and the town centre
Best for: Travellers who want walking access to shops, restaurants and the start of day trips
The main commercial and tourist street, with most hotels, restaurants and shops. Busy but walkable; provides easy access to the bazaar and evening strolls. Can be noisy, so ask for a room away from the road if you are sensitive to traffic.
- 02
Old Manali
Best for: Visitors seeking quieter surroundings and older charm, including the Vashisht Temple area
A smaller, quieter neighbourhood east of the town centre, with small heritage hotels and cafés. The walk from Mall Road is about 15–20 minutes, or a short auto ride. Close to Vashisht Temple and its hot springs, and the river walks. Fewer restaurants nearby, so plan meals in advance.
- 03
Hadimba Temple area
Best for: Families and those who want proximity to the main temple and quieter forest surroundings
North and west of the town centre, among deodar trees. Close to Hadimba Temple and Manu Temple, with a few resort-style hotels and heritage stays. Requires a car or a 20–30 minute walk to reach Mall Road and the bazaars. Good for early-morning temple visits.
- 04
Solang Valley
Best for: Adventure travellers and those wanting high-altitude meadow views
About 14 km north of the town, at a higher altitude (2,500+ m) with adventure sports (paragliding, skiing, rafting). Hotels here are mostly resort-style. You will depend entirely on a car for trips to the town or other sights. The altitude is noticeable; acclimatise carefully.
- 05
Naggar
Best for: Those on a longer stay who want to explore the valley slowly
A small village about 20 km south, with a castle-based hotel, cafés and a quieter pace. Useful if you want to stay away from the town bustle and explore the lower valley. Requires daily drives to reach Manali or Solang.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Manali
- The altitude of 2,050 m is moderate and usually not a problem, but anyone with cardiac or respiratory concerns should consult a doctor and move slowly for the first day.
- Hadimba and Manu temples are accessible and level; the walks around them are gentle. Vashisht Temple involves stairs and a courtyard slope, but the hot springs can be accessed from the lower entry.
- Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley involve long car drives and higher altitudes. These are best skipped on day 1; take them on day 2 or 3 once acclimatised.
- Hire a car and driver for the entire stay rather than relying on autos. The roads are winding, the distances significant, and resting in a cool vehicle is important.
