    Bansbari (outside the main gate)

Best for: First-time visitors who want to be at the park gate for an early safari

Good to know: The closest lodges to the main entry sit around Bansbari, a short drive from the range office. Facilities are basic but practical, with simple rooms, set meals and early starts arranged for you. This is the easiest base for older travellers.

Sights in this area: Bansbari Range and Gate, Jeep Safari in Manas, Manas Maozigendri Ecotourism Society, Rafting on the Manas River

  2. 02

    Mathanguri (inside the park)

Best for: Travellers who want to wake up beside the river and the Bhutan hills

Good to know: A government forest lodge overlooks the Manas river. It is very simple, needs a permit from the Field Director's office at Barpeta Road, and may involve paying for generator fuel. Confirm availability well ahead, as access has varied.

Sights in this area: Rafting on the Manas River

  3. 03

Barpeta Road and Barpeta (gateway towns)

Best for: Budget travellers and anyone breaking the road journey

Good to know: Hotels here suit a night on arrival or departure and put you close to the railway station and the Field Director's office. Expect a longer drive each morning to Bansbari, and simple rooms.

  4. 04

    Community camps and village stays

Best for: Travellers interested in local culture and conservation

Good to know: A few community-run camps and homestay-style cottages operate around the park. Standards vary, and some are new, so check recent reviews and book directly.

A lodge just outside the Bansbari gate, listed in travel guides as the main accommodation near the park entrance, with simple double rooms and meals.

For older travellers: The location is convenient for the gate, but rooms are simple and some are a short walk from the parking area. Ask about ground-floor rooms, hot water and meal timings.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
