Why it matters
Why Ram Gopal Poddar Chhatri, Ramgarh is worth your time
Ramgarh was set up by the Poddar merchant family after leaving Churu, reportedly negotiating tax privileges and self-government, and became wealthy enough in the 19th century to be called a second Varanasi for its Sanskrit learning.
The chhatris show where that wealth went: not just houses, but memorials painted by the same artists. Seeing a cenotaph interior alongside the haveli walls shows how central the painting tradition was to merchant status in Shekhawati.

How to experience it
The complex is made of six structures, four of them cenotaphs, put up by the Poddar family in the late 1800s. The inside of the dome is where the painting is: turquoise-toned frescoes of Krishna's Raas Lila and a long Ramayana sequence painted in indigo.
Stand under the dome and turn slowly. The weathered exterior hides interior murals that visitors describe as exceptional. Take binoculars or a camera with zoom for the upper bands.
Ramgarh itself was founded by Poddar merchants and has over 200 havelis along Poddar and Ruia streets, so combine the chhatri with a walk. Motifs worth spotting include trains and the lovers Dhola and Maru.
