- 01
Day 1: Sand, café and sunset
Start with breakfast at a café on the Ashwem-Mandrem road, then walk to the beach for an hour on the sand before the sun is strong. Finish with dinner inland or at Ashwem and arrange the taxi in advance.

Pacing
Pacing a Mandrem Beach trip for parents and children
- Pick a stay with a pool, parking and ground-floor rooms. Sandy lanes and steps make some heritage houses and huts hard going.
- Carry cash. A travel guide to Mandrem notes that ATMs are scarce, and small cafés may not take cards.
- Swim only in the flagged area watched by lifeguards, and not at all in the monsoon. Ask your hotel about the day's sea conditions.
- Plan outdoor time for the morning and late afternoon, and rest between noon and 3 pm. The sun is strong even in winter.
- Arrange taxis in advance, especially after dinner. Few taxis wait at night and lanes are narrow and dark.
- Eat at places with shade and lower-level seating, and check that venues are open, as many close from May to October.
