The short answer

Worth the drive if you have more than a day. It is a short stop of about 30 minutes, with a smooth approach and little crowd. Combine it with the Sagar Talao group, and go before the sun is high.

History and context

The story behind Darya Khan's Tomb

The tomb is built of red sandstone on a square plan. The main sarcophagus is associated with Darya Khan, who served at the court of Sultan Mahmud II (1510-26). Its form resembles Hoshang Shah's tomb, with four small domes around a central dome. The tomb stands in a walled complex with a mosque, a tank and the ruins of an inn.

Details of the other structures vary between guides, so check the ASI boards on site.

Why it matters

Why Darya Khan's Tomb is worth your time

This tomb is an example of how Mandu continued to build in a recognisable style after the great projects of the fifteenth century. The plan echoes Hoshang Shah's tomb, and the red sandstone gives it a different character. It shows that the Malwa style was carried on in the courtier class as well as the royal one.

For travellers, it is also one of the few places in Mandu where you can see how a tomb sits within a complete group: gate, mosque, tank and inn. The site is quiet because most tours skip it, so it gives a calm contrast with the busy village. If you have a second day, it adds depth to the sultanate story.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Approach the tomb from the road and walk into the walled compound. The building is square and made of red sandstone, with a large central dome and four smaller domes at the corners, a composition that echoes Hoshang Shah's marble tomb but in warmer stone. Walk around the outside and notice the simple porch and the shallow arched openings.

Inside, the chamber holds the main sarcophagus, dedicated to Darya Khan, a courtier of Sultan Mahmud II, who ruled from 1510 to 1526. The room is plain and quiet, with light coming through windows. Look for the remains of the other buildings in the group: a mosque, a water tank and ruins of an inn known as Sarai Kothari, and the nearby Kharbuz tomb.

Because this group is off the main loop, it is a good spot for a short rest. Bring water, wear a hat and take your time in the courtyard, where the sandstone catches the late light.
