The short answer

Vijay Vilas Palace: what visitors should know first

Yes, it is the one sight most people come to Mandvi for. Allow an hour for the visible rooms and terrace, go on a weekday morning or late afternoon, and check current opening hours before you set out, because only part of the palace is open.

History and context

The story behind Vijay Vilas Palace

Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1929. It was built under Maharao Khengarji III as a summer residence for his heir, Vijayaraji, after whom it is named.

Style-wise it is described as Indo-Saracenic with strong Rajput influence, in red sandstone, with a central dome on pillars, smaller domes, corner bastions and carved screens. Craftsmen from Jaipur, Bengal and Saurashtra are said to have worked on it. Sources differ slightly on exact dates, so treat 1920-29 as the commonly cited span.

Why it matters

Why Vijay Vilas Palace is worth your time

Vijay Vilas matters because it shows what Kutch's rulers built for themselves once the sea trade had made Mandvi rich. It was designed as a seaside retreat, not a fortress, and its Rajput forms, Bengal-style domes and carved jalis speak of craftsmen brought in from several regions, with local Kutchi stonemasons and carpenters working alongside them.

It also stands as a link between the old princely state and today's Mandvi. The family still uses the palace, and the estate now runs a heritage guest camp and welcomes day visitors. The palace has been used as a film location, which is why many Indians recognise its dome before they know the name of the town.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The dome and jalis

Look up at the central dome and the stone latticework; the carving is the main reason to pause outside.

  2. 02

    The terrace view

The upper terrace gives the best single view over the gardens to the sea.

  3. 03

    Garden and fountains

The water channels and marble fountains in the grounds are the calmest part of the visit.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Approach by road from Mandvi and you will see the palace's central dome well before the gate. The building sits in a formal garden with water channels and fountains, and the first thing to do is walk the front terrace slowly, because the carved stone jalis and the coloured-glass windows look best in low light. Inside, the visitor route takes in a small number of rooms, with the family's museum display on the lower level.

The upper terrace is the reward. From there you see the garden, the line of the shore and the sea, and you can understand why the Kutch rulers chose this stretch of coast for summers. Photography is usually allowed for a fee, but rules change, so ask at the ticket window rather than assuming.

The estate also has a private beach and a tented guest camp, so many visitors combine the palace with a meal or a stretch on the sand. Keep the rest of the day easy: the palace is close to the public beach and the wind-farm coast, and lunch back in town works well before an afternoon at the shipyards.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check current opening hours and fees before leaving town
  • Carry a photo ID, as Mandvi is a port town with local security checks
  • Bring a hat, as the garden approach has little shade
  • Pair with the beach in the same outing

No. Reports describe only a small number of rooms and the terrace as open, with the upper floor private to the family.

Can I stay at the palace?

The estate runs a separate tented camp on its private beach; the palace itself is a family home. See our page on staying at the beach camp.

Is it worth the trip from Bhuj?

It is one of the better reasons to make the day trip, especially when combined with the beach and the dhow yards.
