Plan 01

1 day in Mangaluru

  1. 01

Day 1: Temples, a church and a beach walk

Start early at Kadri Manjunath Temple to see the temple and the peaceful Kadri Park gardens. Walk around the Pandava Caves nearby if energy permits. Have breakfast or an early lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit St. Aloysius Chapel on Lighthouse Hill (interior frescoes are the draw; shoes off inside), then walk to Tagore Park nearby for a view over the city. If time and energy allow, visit Panambur Beach in the late afternoon for a walk or sunset sit. End with a seafood dinner at a family-run restaurant in Bejai or near the port area.

Plan 02

2 days in Mangaluru

  1. 01

Day 1: Heritage temples and churches

Begin at Kadri Manjunath Temple and Kadri Park, then move to the Mangaladevi Temple at Bolar (a short drive away) to see a shrine older and less rebuilt than Kadri's. Walk around Bolar's quieter streets if inclined. In the afternoon, visit St. Aloysius Chapel and Tagore Park. Have dinner in Bejai or Pandeshwar with local Mangalorean specialities.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Beaches and museums

Morning at Panambur or Tannirbhavi Beach with a quiet walk; bring water and sit for an hour if the weather is calm. For a shaded midday break, visit Pilikula Nisargadhama wildlife park east of the city (zoo, gardens, lake walks; roughly 45–60 minutes one way, traffic dependent), or visit Aloyseum museum and Bejai Museum in the city. Late afternoon, visit Milagres Church, then spend time walking through Kala Kendara or the port area to see Mangaluru as a working city.

Plan 03

3 days in Mangaluru

  1. 01

Day 1: Kadri and Bolar temples

Visit Kadri Manjunath Temple and Kadri Park in the morning, spend an hour in the gardens, then drive to Mangaladevi Temple at Bolar and walk the neighbourhood. Lunch nearby. In the afternoon, visit St. Aloysius Chapel and Tagore Park for the city view.

  2. 02

Day 2: Beaches and a drive to Pandava Caves

Spend a quiet morning at Panambur or Tannirbhavi Beach, then drive inland to Pandava Caves (roughly 1.5 hours each way from the city), a group of rock-cut caves near Kadri with Buddhist origins and local legends. The site is small, lightly visited and set in countryside. Return for dinner at a restaurant near Sultan Battery or the port, where you can watch the city's evening light.

  3. 03

Day 3: Museums, markets and a leisure afternoon

Visit Aloyseum (a museum of Mangaluru's trade and history) and Bejai Museum in the morning. Spend time shopping or sitting at a café in Kala Kendara or near the port. If energy allows, drive south to Ullal Beach or Kotekar Beach for a coastal walk. End with a final seafood meal and, if interested, an evening walk through Johari Bazaar or port-side areas to see the city come alive in the cooler hours.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Choose a hotel in Bejai or Lighthouse Hill rather than the port-side industrial areas. Both have heritage hotels with character and are quieter than central Mangaluru.
  • Temple visits are early morning (6–8 a.m. opening) to avoid crowds and heat. Kadri Manjunath and Mangaladevi temples have steep internal stairs—wear comfortable shoes and ascend slowly.
  • Beaches are best in October–January; April–June the heat and wind make them uncomfortable for extended time. A beach walk of 30–45 minutes is usually enough.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day; auto-rickshaw queues and crowded buses are tiring. A driver also makes side trips (Pandava Caves, Pilikula) manageable without fatigue.
  • Rest in the afternoon (2–4 p.m.). A good hotel with air-conditioning and a quiet room is essential, especially April–June.
  • Seafood is the city's strength but can be heavy. If digestion is sensitive, eat lighter fish dishes and avoid curries with thick coconut cream. Local restaurants are hygienic but can be oily in cooking.
