The short answer

Rizal Park: what visitors should know first

Yes, as a calm, green break between Intramuros and the bay. Go in the morning or late afternoon, and treat it as a stroll, not a march.

History and context

The story behind Rizal Park

The area's history begins in 1820 with the completion of Paseo de Luneta. It was declared Luneta National Park on 19 December 1955 and renamed Rizal Park in 1967.

The Rizal Monument was unveiled on 30 December 1913. The contract was awarded to Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling after an international design competition.

Why it matters

Why Rizal Park is worth your time

Rizal Park matters as Manila's civic space, a place where the nation's hero is commemorated and where people come to stroll, picnic and attend events. It sits next to Intramuros, so the two together give both the Spanish-era city and the republic's symbolic centre.

The park's Luneta name goes back to the Paseo de Luneta, completed in 1820, and it became Luneta National Park in 1955 before being renamed Rizal Park in 1967. Its Quirino Grandstand has long hosted presidential oath-takings. It is crowded on weekends and holidays, so a weekday visit gives a more reflective experience.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start at the Rizal Monument, unveiled in 1913 and designed by the Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling after an international competition. The Kilometre Zero marker is in front, from which road distances from Manila are measured. Take a moment to watch the honour guard and the families who gather here.

Walk through the park's gardens. The Chinese and Japanese Gardens were set up with donations from the Taiwanese and Japanese governments, and the lagoon and pagodas make a pleasant shaded interval. The musical dancing fountain, built in 1968, draws visitors in the evening.

The park is bigger than it looks on a map at 58 hectares, so choose a few features and stop for water. Finish by walking towards the bay for sunset at the Baywalk.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early or late to avoid the heat
  • Carry water; shade is limited
  • Check any fees for gardens or shows
  • Keep valuables in a front bag
  • Combine with the Baywalk for sunset
