Marari is the beach village of Mararikulam, on the coast of Alappuzha district in Kerala, about 11 km north of Alappuzha town. It is not a resort strip. Instead you get a long, quiet stretch of sand backed by coconut palms, fishing hamlets with boats drawn up on the shore, and a few places to stay. People come for slow days, not sightseeing lists.
Its appeal is partly what it lacks. There is no promenade of shops and little nightlife. The pace is set by the fishing day, the heat and the tide, and a good Marari day is a walk on firm sand in the early morning, a long rest at midday and another walk before sunset. The village also has a Shiva temple, the Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple, which gives a view of daily worship.
The coast north and south adds range. Alappuzha's town beach and the backwaters lie to the south, while Arthunkal's basilica and Cherthala's Devi temple lie to the north, each within an easy drive. Pathiramanal island in Vembanad Lake offers a birdwatching morning for those who want the lake as well as the sea.
Marari suits older travellers who value quiet and are happy with a limited choice of restaurants and sights. It does not suit anyone who wants to be near lots of activity. Swim with caution, since the Arabian Sea here can carry strong currents, and plan around the heat and the monsoon rains from June to October.
