Plan 01

1 day in Mathura

  1. 01

Day 1: Krishna Janmasthan and the ghats

Arrive early and go directly to the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex to see the main sanctuary and the underground chamber where Krishna is believed to have been born. The complex opens around dawn; queue lengths are shorter in early morning. After 2–3 hours inside, walk to the Yamuna ghats nearby to see pilgrims bathing and priests performing rituals. Stop at a small ghat-side café for chai or a light snack. Visit the Gita Mandir or Dwarkadhish Temple in the late afternoon when it cools slightly. End with an evening aarti (prayer ceremony) at one of the smaller temples along the ghats, then explore the flower and spice markets in the old city lanes. Have dinner at a local sweet shop or vegetarian restaurant.

Plan 02

2 days in Mathura

  1. 01

Day 1: Temples and sacred waters

Begin before dawn at the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex, spending 2–3 hours exploring the main shrine and the sacred well inside. Walk to the Yamuna ghats and watch the sunrise and morning rituals. Return to your hotel for a rest and a late breakfast. In the early evening, visit the Keshav Dev Temple, another major shrine dedicated to Krishna as a young cowherd. Attend the evening aarti ceremony. Walk through the streets nearby, stopping at a temple café or sweet shop.

  2. 02

Day 2: Sculptural heritage and river walks

Spend the morning at the Government Museum (Mathura Museum), which holds one of India's finest collections of Kushan-era sculpture and Krishna art from 1st–3rd centuries CE. The air-conditioned galleries are a refuge from heat and crowds. After lunch and a long rest at your hotel, take an evening walk along the Yamuna ghats with a local guide who can explain the bathing rituals and the rivers spiritual role. Visit Banke Bihari Ghat or Shahi Ghat to see pilgrims and hear the temple bells. If visiting during Holi (February or March), see the Lathmar Holi celebrations in nearby Barsana if time allows, or witness the coloured powder rituals in Mathura's streets.

Plan 03

3 days in Mathura

  1. 01

Day 1: Janmasthan and devotional immersion

Arrive early and spend the morning at the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex, exploring the main sanctuary, the underground Garbha Griha (inner sanctum) and the gardens. Understand the site's history and architecture with a local guide. Rest at your hotel through the afternoon. In the evening, visit the Keshav Dev Temple to see the evening aarti, then walk the nearby lanes to catch the temple bells and ritual rhythms of the old city.

  2. 02

Day 2: Museums, history, and ghats

Spend the morning at the Government Museum, studying Kushan sculpture and Krishna iconography over two hours. After lunch, visit the Gita Mandir, a marble temple dedicated to the Bhagavad Gita. In the late afternoon, hire a guide and walk the Yamuna ghats at a slow pace—Banke Bihari Ghat, Dhan Ghat, and others—seeing pilgrims bathe, priests perform puja (worship), and the river's spiritual importance to locals. End with dinner at a traditional vegetarian restaurant.

  3. 03

Day 3: Day trip and temple exploration

Take a morning drive to Vrindavan (roughly 30–45 minutes by road), Krishna's childhood home, to see the Banke Bihari Temple, Radha Raman Temple and Radha Vallabh Temple. Return to Mathura by early afternoon. Rest, then visit any temple or neighbourhood you missed: Dwarkadhish, Radha Rani, or the older lanes near the bazaars. Spend your final evening at a ghat watching sunset over the Yamuna, reflecting on the city's devotional life.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Book a car with a driver for the entire stay; walking in Mathura's lanes is crowded and uneven, and relying on autos between sights is tiring.
  • Visit the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex at opening time (usually before 6 AM) to avoid crowds and intense heat. Expect stairs and narrow passages inside; take your time.
  • The Yamuna ghats have many steps. Choose a few accessible ghats like Banke Bihari or Dhan Ghat, and go in the early morning or late afternoon when it is cool.
  • Stay near the temples if possible, or at Chatta Bazaar, and take a long afternoon rest (2–3 hours) to recover from heat and crowds. Morning activity, afternoon rest, gentle evening routine.
  • The Government Museum is air-conditioned and level; spend a leisurely 2–3 hours there instead of rushing between small temples in the sun.
  • Arrange a knowledgeable local guide through your hotel; they can explain customs, navigate crowds and suggest the least stressful routes through temples.
