The short answer

Sky View bamboo watchtower: what visitors should know first

Go if the sky is clear and you are comfortable on a narrow bamboo stair; skip it in rain or if you have knee trouble. Reports give very different heights, so expect a short climb and a view, not a tall tower.

History and context

The story behind Sky View bamboo watchtower

Outlook's 2017 guide describes Sky View as a bamboo watchtower built by local school teacher Rishop Khongthongreh. It does not give a construction date, so none is stated here.

Why it matters

Why Sky View bamboo watchtower is worth your time

The tower is a local initiative. Outlook credits teacher Rishop Khongthongreh with building it, and it shows how the village has turned its position on the Bangladesh border, and its forest bamboo, into something visitors can use. It is built from materials found nearby and is maintained by the community.

The view also explains the setting. Mawlynnong sits on the southern edge of the Khasi Hills, and from the top you can see how quickly the hills fall to the plains. That is the same drop that sends the Umngot river through the Dawki valley a short drive away.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The climb

Narrow bamboo steps and a rope rail make this a short, slightly wobbly climb. Go slowly and one person at a time.

  2. 02

    Rooftops and palms

Look down over tin roofs, areca palms and neat lanes to see how compact the village is.

  3. 03

    Bangladesh plains

On clear days the land flattens towards Bangladesh. Morning visibility is best.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk to the tower through the village rather than driving to the edge. You will see it as a bamboo frame with a platform at the top, and a queue forms at busy times. Climb slowly, hold the rope rail, and keep to the number of people the attendant allows.

From the top you see the village's rooftops, areca palms and fields below, and on clear days the flat plains of Bangladesh in the distance. Mornings usually give the best visibility, and mist can hide the view completely in the monsoon, so do not decide on the visit only for the view.

Published sources disagree on height. Outlook gives about 26 metres, while another guide describes a platform of roughly 8 to 9 metres, and others quote feet. Treat all figures as approximate. A treehouse near the church is also used for views and stays, so ask which structure you are looking at.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Climb in dry weather only, as bamboo is slippery when wet
  • Hold the rope handrail and respect the group limit
  • Carry small change for the fee
  • Do not climb with large bags
  • Skip it if the sky is cloudy; there is little to see
