The short answer

Laknavaram Lake: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want a restful stop: the lake is pretty, the hanging bridges are the highlight and the boat ride is simple. It sits near Mulugu, on the way between Warangal and Medaram, but check boating hours and bridge access locally.

History and context

The story behind Laknavaram Lake

The lake is attributed to the Kakatiya dynasty, in the 13th century. Wikipedia lists a surface area of about 40 sq km and a capacity of roughly 60 million cubic metres.

Three of the islands are developed as tourist centres, and a 160-metre hanging bridge links three islands.

Why it matters

Why Laknavaram Lake is worth your time

Laknavaram was built by the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century and covers a vast area, with a maximum depth near 10 metres and some 13 islands. It irrigates thousands of acres and is surrounded by deciduous forest, so it is both a working reservoir and a leisure spot.

For a Medaram trip it fills the gap between pilgrimage and nature: you can spend a morning at the shrine and an afternoon by the water. It also shows how Kakatiya engineers shaped the landscape of this region, since the temples, lakes and forts around Warangal were all part of one irrigation-minded state.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The hanging bridges

Three suspension bridges link Island 1 to the shore, and a 160-metre one joins three islands.

  2. 02

    Boating

Speedboat and pontoon rides across the lake, with a ferry to the islands.

  3. 03

    Forest on every side

The lake is ringed by deciduous forest, so birdwatching is easy from the shore.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The lake is a short drive off the main road. Park, buy tickets locally, and walk onto the first suspension bridge, which links the shore to Island 1. The bridge swings gently when others walk it, so go early when it is calm.

Boating is available in speedboats and pontoon boats, and a ferry runs to the islands. Cottages, tents and glass houses are available at the lake for overnight stays, which makes it a tranquil base if you are visiting Medaram over two days.

If you have limited energy, stay on the shore and use the viewing tower, then return. Combine this stop with Ramappa Temple on the same day: the two are within a short drive of Mulugu and fit comfortably into a day from Warangal.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check boating and bridge hours at the gate
  • Use non-slip shoes on the bridges
  • Follow staff instructions on crocodile warnings
  • Book cottages ahead if you want to stay
  • Carry water and sun protection
