The short answer

Adichunchanagiri Peacock Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go if you want an easy, short wildlife stop alongside a visit to the Adichunchanagiri math. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon when peafowl are active, expect a modest site with few facilities, and confirm timings and any fee locally.

History and context

The story behind Adichunchanagiri Peacock Wildlife Sanctuary

The area was protected as a sanctuary in the 1970s and 1980s, with sources giving 1981 as the date it was notified as the Adichunchanagiri Peacock Sanctuary. In August 2024 the Union government formally declared it a peacock sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act.

It lies in the hills around the Chunchanagiri math and temple, and the religious community there is widely credited with helping the peafowl population thrive.

Why it matters

Why Adichunchanagiri Peacock Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Adichunchanagiri is one of very few sanctuaries in India created specifically for peafowl, and it is known locally as Mayuravana, the peafowl forest. Its birds are credited to the protection that the math and local religious sentiment have given them.

That gives it a character different from the tiger reserves further south. It is a small place where a visit is about patience, rocks and scrub rather than safari vehicles. It is also recognised as an Important Bird Area, with dozens of dry-zone scrub species. For Melkote visitors with an extra half-day, it adds a gentle wildlife stop to a trip that is otherwise about temples and stepped hills.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Peafowl in the scrub

Peacocks and peahens move through the boulders and thorn scrub, easiest to spot early or late in the day.

  2. 02

    Dry-zone birdlife

The sanctuary is an Important Bird Area, with dozens of scrub species; bring binoculars if you have them.

  3. 03

    Pairing with the math

The sanctuary sits close to the Adichunchanagiri math, so a temple visit and a short bird walk fit in one outing.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a side trip from Melkote or as part of a longer drive along the Bengaluru side, since the sanctuary sits roughly 12 km beyond Nagamangala on local roads and the drive from Melkote takes well over an hour. Leave early so you arrive when the peafowl are active, in the cooler hours, when they move through the scrub and rock.

The sanctuary covers granite hills with dry deciduous and thorn scrub, so the walking is over open, uneven ground. Keep to the paths, stay quiet and look towards the base of boulders and low branches. Peacocks are most visible in the early morning and late afternoon, and bonnet macaques, mongooses and many dry-zone scrub birds share the area.

Because the sanctuary lies beside the Adichunchanagiri math, many visitors combine the two. If you visit the math, observe its dress and conduct rules and do not feed the birds or animals. Carry water and a snack, since there is no accommodation and facilities inside the sanctuary are minimal, and eat in Nagamangala before or after.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early or late for active peafowl and cooler air
  • Carry water, a hat and binoculars; facilities are minimal
  • Confirm hours and any fee at the gate or forest office
  • Do not feed or chase the birds and animals
  • Eat in Nagamangala; there is no lodging inside the sanctuary
