Why it matters
Why Nagaur Fort (Ahhichhatragarh) is worth your time
Nagaur Fort is among the most carefully restored forts in Rajasthan. It passed into the care of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust in 1985, and its restoration, supported by the Getty Foundation and the Helen Hamlyn Trust, won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2002.
For a traveller in Merta, it adds a more architectural experience to the devotional focus of Meera Bai, and it is quieter than the big-name Rajasthan forts. It has its own full guide under Nagaur.

How to experience it
Drive from Merta towards Nagaur in the morning so you arrive at 9 am when the fort opens. Spend two to three hours walking the courtyards, water tanks, painted rooms and pavilions; a guide helps with the stories behind the paintings.
Take a break in a shaded courtyard or at the hotel inside the fort. Climb to the ramparts for views over the town and its mosque minarets. The fort is large, about 36 acres, so pace yourself.
Return to Merta by late afternoon, or continue to Jodhpur or Bikaner. Merta and Nagaur make a natural pair, because both are in Nagaur district and about 80 km apart.
