Before you go
Minicoy with elderly parents: what to know
- Plan one outing a day, in the morning, and rest through midday. Heat and humidity are high all year, even in the cooler months.
- The island is flat, which suits walking, but boat and helicopter transfers involve stepping on and off small craft. Ask for help and avoid rough-sea days.
- The lighthouse has about 216 internal steps. Skip the climb if long staircases are difficult; the base and shoreline are pleasant on their own.
- Medical facilities are basic. Carry regular medicines with a prescription, a first-aid kit and any travel insurance details, and tell your operator about health conditions.
- Travel here is long. Allow a buffer for ship and helicopter delays, especially in the monsoon.
- Dress modestly everywhere and respect prayer times. It keeps visits to villages and the mosque comfortable.
Easiest first
Places in Minicoy sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (9)
- Jahadhoni Race Boats and Minicoy Fest (Culture and craft · 1 to 3 hours; a full day for the fest) — Races are watched from the shore on level ground, though crowds and sun can be tiring. Look for shade, take a seat if available and bring water; boat rides themselves involve stepping in and out of small craft.
- Juma Masjid, Minicoy (Places of worship · 20 to 40 minutes) — The approach is on level ground, but removing shoes and sitting on the floor can be tiring, and there may be limited seating. Ask a guide about arrangements and rest before or after.
- Lava Dance (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — Performances are seated or standing at ground level, usually in the evening when it is cooler. Ask for a seat near the front, avoid long waits in the sun and bring water.
- Minicoy Lagoon: Snorkelling and Boat Rides (Sports · 2 to 4 hours) — Boat entry can be awkward, but glass-bottom rides need no swimming. Insist on life jackets, ask for assistance boarding and avoid rough days or midday heat.
- Minicoy Tuna and Island Meals (Food and restaurants · A normal meal; ask hosts about preparation time) — Meals are usually served where you stay, so little walking is needed. Ask for milder spice, well-cooked fish and boiled or bottled water, and tell hosts about any dietary limits in advance.
- Minicoy's Villages (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The island is flat and lanes are level, which suits walking and cycling, though midday heat and humidity are strong. Plan short stretches, carry water and ask your host about transport between villages.
- Salliballu Buddhist Remains (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — Ground is flat but may be uneven or overgrown, with little shade or seating. Wear closed shoes, carry water and go with a guide who knows the way.
- Thundi Beach (Places to visit · Half a day) — The ground is flat and the lagoon is shallow and calm in the dry season, which suits older visitors, but shade is limited and the sand can be hot. Bring a hat, water and a chair or mat if your operator can arrange one.
- Tuna Canning Factory and Fish Landing (Culture and craft · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Level ground, but jetties can be wet and slippery and the smell of fish is strong. Wear closed shoes with grip and stay clear of boats and machinery.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Viringili Islet (Places to visit · Half a day with the boat ride) — Getting in and out of small boats and walking on soft sand is the main effort. There is no built shade or seating to rely on, so older travellers should confirm the boat is stable, bring water and plan a short stay.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Minicoy Island Lighthouse (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours including the climb) — The tower has a winding internal staircase of about 216 steps with little room to rest, so it suits only those comfortable with long climbs in humid heat. Anyone who prefers not to climb can still enjoy the tower from the ground and the quiet southern shore around it.

Practical tips for Minicoy
- Permit first. Apply for the entry permit through the official portal, naming every island you will visit, and allow at least two weeks. Do not book non-refundable travel until the permit is approved.
- Heat and humidity. Temperatures stay in the low 30s Celsius by day all year with high humidity. Plan outings for early morning and late afternoon, and carry water and a hat.
- Dress and customs. Minicoy is a conservative Muslim island. Cover shoulders and knees in villages, avoid public displays of affection, and ask before photographing people or homes. Alcohol is not available.
- Getting around. The island is flat, so walking and cycling work well. Taxis and autos are few; boats are hired for the lagoon and islets. There is no public bus.
- Money and connectivity. Carry enough cash, as ATMs are limited and cards may not be accepted. Mobile signal and internet can be patchy, so download maps and tickets before you travel.
- Monsoon and sea. From roughly mid-May to mid-September, seas outside the lagoon are rough and transport can be disrupted. Allow buffer days and confirm sailings and flights close to departure.
- Reef etiquette. Do not touch, stand on or collect coral or shells. Use reef-friendly sun protection, take your rubbish back and stay in the areas your guide recommends.
- Health. Medical facilities are basic. Carry regular medicines with prescriptions, and tell your operator about health conditions before any boat or helicopter transfer.
