The short answer

Sumendu Lake (Mirik Lake): what visitors should know first

Yes, this is the heart of Mirik and where most visits begin. Walk as much of the lakeside path as suits you, cross the footbridge, and keep the first or last light of the day for it, when the air is clearer and the crowds are thinner. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed circuit and a snack.

History and context

The story behind Sumendu Lake (Mirik Lake)

According to Wikipedia, the West Bengal tourism department began acquiring about 335 acres from the neighbouring Thurbo tea estate in 1969. Development began in 1974, and the tourist spot was inaugurated in April 1979 by the then chief minister, Jyoti Basu.

The lake sits at about 1,494 metres and is the lowest point of the town. A garden, named in Wikipedia as Savitri Pushpaudyan, lies on one side and pine forest on the other, linked by an arched footbridge called Indreni Pool.

Why it matters

Why Sumendu Lake (Mirik Lake) is worth your time

The lake is the one place where Mirik's story is visible. It is not a natural feature left alone for centuries but a created tourist landscape: in 1969 the West Bengal tourism department began acquiring land from the neighbouring Thurbo tea estate, development began in the 1970s and the complex was inaugurated in 1979. That gives the town its shape, with a loop road, hotels at one end and a market at the other.

It also matters because it makes Mirik easy. A traveller with limited stamina can enjoy the water, the bridge, pines and garden without driving anywhere, which is rare in hill country where most views require a climb. Treat it as the town's living room: a place to walk, sit, eat something small and watch the weather change over the ridges.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The footbridge

An arched bridge, about 24 m (80 ft) long, links the garden and pine sides and gives the best view along the water.

  2. 02

    The lakeside circuit

A path of about 3.5 km runs around the lake, with the western bank through cryptomeria forest.

  3. 03

    Early light and the mountains

On clear mornings the Kangchenjunga range is visible beyond the lake, though cloud often hides it.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The lake is long and narrow, so decide what you want from it. For a gentle outing, start at the Krishnanagar end, walk to the footbridge and cross it, then continue along whichever bank looks calmer. The path is about 3.5 km all the way round, but nobody needs to do all of it. Part of the western bank runs through cryptomeria forest and is uneven, while the eastern side has more shops and stalls.

Boating and pony rides are available, and a floating fountain is reported to be lit in the evening. If you take a boat, ask for life jackets, as reviewers have reported that they are not always offered. Early morning is the best time for clear air and, on good days, a view of Kangchenjunga beyond the water; after about 10 am the lakeside fills with day visitors and stalls.

End with something warm to eat. Chatpati, a spiced corn snack, and momos from the stalls are the usual choices. If energy remains, the Debisthan temple stairs begin on the western bank, and Bokar Monastery is a short taxi ride up the ridge.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Walk the section that suits you and rest on a bench; the full circuit is optional
  • Ask for life jackets before any boat ride
  • Go before 10 am for the clearest air and fewest people
  • Carry small cash for snacks, boats and pony rides
  • Wear a warm layer; it cools quickly in the evening
