How to reach Mirissa by air
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake is the usual arrival point. Several Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi, have flights to CMB; check airlines for current routes. From the airport it is about 3 hours or more by road to Mirissa, depending on traffic.
How to reach Mirissa by train
Mirissa railway station (MIS) is on the Coastal Line, about 2 km east of the town and roughly 147 km from Colombo Fort. Services here are slow; Weligama or Matara (MTR) have more choice. Check Sri Lanka Railways for current timetables, and expect a short tuk-tuk to your stay.
How to reach Mirissa by road
The Southern Expressway runs from the Colombo area towards Galle and Matara, and the old coast road (A2) passes through Mirissa. Buses and taxis run along the coast. A car with driver from the airport or Colombo is the easiest transfer for families and seniors.
Getting around Mirissa
The beach, harbour and Parrot Rock are mostly walkable from beach-side stays. Tuk-tuks cover the rest, so agree the fare first. Hire a car with driver for Weligama, Galle, Dondra and Matara; scooters are rented at some guesthouses but are a poor idea for older visitors.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Mirissa
- Take travel insurance and carry prescriptions. Mirissa has clinics, but the large public hospitals are in Galle and Matara, so ask your hotel for the nearest option.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
