Why it matters

Why Lakhaniya Dari is worth your time

Lakhaniya Dari is one of the taller waterfalls in this part of Uttar Pradesh, and its 150 m drop makes it the dramatic counterpart to the gentler falls closer to Mirzapur town. It sits in a forested valley in the Vindhya hills, and the effort needed to reach it filters out most casual visitors.

It is also a place where the cost of poor judgement is high. The deep pool, slippery rocks and remote setting mean that careful planning matters more here than at Wyndham or Tanda. For fit walkers it can be the best day out in the district. For everyone else, the nearer falls give a good flavour of the Vindhya monsoon with far less risk.

What not to miss

    The 150 m plunge

Wikipedia lists the main fall as a plunge waterfall about 150 m high, among the taller falls in the region.

  2. 02

    The walk in

The 2 to 3 km trail crosses boulders, streams and forest, an adventure for fit walkers.

  3. 03

    The Lakhaniya valley

The setting in the Vindhya hills is remote and green, especially after the rains.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Lakhaniya Dari is a long outing rather than a quick stop. It lies at Latifpur near Ahraura, in the south of Mirzapur district, and travel sources put it roughly 54 km from Varanasi, so a hired taxi and an early start are essential. Allow most of a day, including the drive.

From the entry gate, the main fall is reported to be 2 to 3 km away, about an hour and a half on foot, over large boulders, streams and woodland. One guide describes the setting as lonely and recommends going in a group, so do not attempt it alone. Wikipedia describes the fall as a plunge waterfall about 150 m high, and it is most impressive when the monsoon has swollen the water.

There is no eating place nearby, so carry food and water. The main pool is very deep and drownings are reported every year, so do not swim there. Leave in good time to be out of the valley before dusk, and skip the trip altogether if rain has made the trail treacherous.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go in a group and in daylight only
  • Carry food and water; there is nowhere to eat
  • Do not swim in the main pool; it is very deep
  • Check current entry charges at the gate
  • Skip it if heavy rain has made the trail slippery
