The short answer

Impur Mission Centre: what visitors should know first

Visit if mission history interests you. Impur is a working church town, not a tourist site, so stop briefly on the way to or from Mopungchuket and behave as you would at any active place of worship.

History and context

The story behind Impur Mission Centre

Dr E. W. Clark, an American Baptist missionary, reached the Ao area in 1872 and founded Impur as a mission centre in 1894. In 1897 the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang, the Ao Baptist church association, was formed and Impur became its headquarters, a role it still holds.

The town is nicknamed the Jerusalem of Nagaland and the Morung Express describes the first Baptist mission centre in Nagaland at Impur as a pilgrimage site.

Why it matters

Why Impur Mission Centre is worth your time

Impur is where the Ao church organised itself. Dr Edward Winter Clark, an American Baptist missionary, founded the mission centre in 1894, and in 1897 the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang was formed, with Impur as its headquarters. The district profile calls it a pilgrimage site for the Nagaland Baptist community.

That makes it central to understanding modern Ao society. About 98 per cent of Aos are Christian according to the district profile, mostly Baptist, and the Aos were the first Naga tribe to adopt the faith. Impur is where much of that history was written down and organised.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Impur as a short, respectful stop, not an attraction. It is a small town with a church, a higher secondary school and a hospital, and is the headquarters of the Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang, which covers around 159 churches in Nagaland according to Wikipedia. Ask at the church office or through your hotel if there is a good time to see the main church area.

Before you go, read a little about Dr Edward Winter Clark, the American Baptist missionary who reached the Ao area in 1872 and founded the Impur mission in 1894. The history helps make sense of the town. The Ao Baptist association formed in 1897, and Impur has been its headquarters since.

Combine it with Mopungchuket, which is the neighbouring village, and plan Sunday carefully: services are the point of the day, and visitors should not disturb them.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
