The Gateway of India was commissioned to commemorate George V's visit in 1911, and the arch was completed in 1924. It was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet and stands as a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture, blending Mughal and Byzantine styles.
Historically, it was the official entry point to India for many British governors and officials arriving by ship. On 28 February 1948, the last British regiment marched out through the Gateway, marking the symbolic end of British rule. Today it is Mumbai's most famous landmark and one of the seven wonders of India.

How to experience it
Come early, between 6 and 8 am, when the light is soft and the waterfront is quiet except for fishermen. The arch, built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, looms 26 metres above the platform and is best seen from across the promenade, not underneath it. Walk around to see it from different angles and look at the Arabic calligraphy on the inner walls.
The surrounding waterfront is lively in the late afternoon and evening, with street vendors selling snacks and drinks, and families taking an evening stroll. If you like that energy, come back after 4 pm for a different experience. Photographs from the promenade or from a boat (which tourists can hire from the jetty) are standard, so expect company.
Don't linger more than 30 minutes unless you are a serious architecture student. Pair it with Taj Mahal Palace Hotel just behind, and walk down to Colaba Causeway for shopping and food.
