Why it matters
Why Bihar School of Yoga is worth your time
Bihar School of Yoga is one of the most recognised yoga institutions in India. Its influence reaches far beyond Munger, and the 2013 World Yoga Convention drew more than 50,000 participants in person or online.
For Munger it has given a modern identity alongside the fort's military past, drawing visitors from India and abroad to a town that would otherwise be known mainly for its gun trade. It is the main reason Munger carries the nickname Yoga Nagri.

How to experience it
The school occupies part of Munger Fort, on a site that includes the Karnachaura area, which it has owned since 1978. The institution was inaugurated on 19 January 1964 by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, who lit an akhanda jyoti in honour of his guru, Sivananda Saraswati.
Its programmes have included short courses, a one-month Progressive Yoga Vidya Training and, since 2020, online presentations on health and stress. Teacher training was discontinued in 2015. Details change, so check the school's current programme list before planning a visit.
If you are not enrolling, the best way to appreciate the school is to see the fort and ghat and enjoy the calm of the surrounding area. Respect the quiet of residents and the school's rules.
