The short answer

Meesapulimala Trek: what visitors should know first

Book it as a KFDC package with a night at the base camp or Rhodo Valley, and only if you are fit for a long uphill day at altitude. The summit walk is steep and exposed to wind and cloud. It is not suitable for anyone with heart, lung or knee problems.

History and context

The story behind Meesapulimala Trek

Meesapulimala rises to about 2,640 m on the Idukki border between the Anamalai and Palani hills. Treks are run by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) from its base camp and Rhodo Valley camp above Munnar.

Why it matters

Why Meesapulimala Trek is worth your time

Meesapulimala is one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats, and Kerala Tourism describes it as the second highest. The summit grasslands look across the high ranges towards Anamudi, and on many mornings the valleys below fill with cloud.

The area is home to Nilgiri tahr, sambar, gaur, wild dogs and sloth bears, and Rhodo Valley is named for its rhododendrons. Limiting access to guided KFDC groups is how the grasslands are being protected, so book through the official route rather than an unlicensed operator.

  3. 03

    Mountain stays

Tents at base camp or a lodge in Rhodo Valley make an overnight trip possible.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

KFDC packages start with a drive of about 24 km from Munnar via Mattupetty to the base camp, sometimes called the Silent Valley base camp, at roughly 6,000 ft (1,830 m). From there a jeep track of about 4 km climbs to Rhodo Valley, the last point a vehicle can reach. Accommodation is in tents at base camp (a maximum of about 40 people a night), at Rhodo Mansion in Rhodo Valley, or in KFDC's Sky Cottage.

The trek itself goes up from Rhodo Valley with a KFDC guide, over grassy ridges with patches of shola forest, to the summit at about 2,640 m (8,660 ft). Sources give the round trip as roughly 8 to 11 km, depending on where you start, and most people take five to seven hours. Start early: cloud often covers the top by late morning.

The ground is uneven and slippery in mist, and the wind at the top can be cold even when Munnar is warm. Bring a rain jacket, a warm layer and shoes with good grip. Packages include meals and the guide; the jeep transfer is usually extra.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a KFDC package in advance
  • Budget for the jeep transfer to camp
  • Start the summit walk early to beat the cloud
  • Carry a rain jacket and a warm layer
  • Do not attempt the Kolukkumalai side without permission
