The short answer
Best areas to stay in Munnar
- 01
Central Munnar (around the town bazaar and main road)
Best for: Convenience, shops and restaurants within walking distance
Puts you in the middle of activity with easy access to the market, tea shops and restaurants. Traffic noise is a trade-off. Hotels range from budget to mid-range. Good for families who want to walk to meals and shops.
- 02
Upper Munnar (towards Echo Point and Top Station roads)
Best for: Quieter stays with views of plantations
Higher altitude areas with resorts and home-stays set among tea gardens. Stunning views but a car is essential to reach restaurants and shops. Great for peace and nature; less practical for those who like easy walking access to town.
- 03
Pothamedu and around (southeast of town)
Best for: Budget stays and less-touristy surroundings
Quieter area with smaller hotels and home-stays. Close to tea gardens and viewpoints but away from town crowds. Good for independent travellers; families may prefer central Munnar.
- 04
Near Eravikulam (further northeast)
Best for: Easy early access to the national park
Puts you closest to Eravikulam National Park, ideal if that is your priority. Fewer restaurants nearby; you may eat mainly at your hotel. Very quiet and nature-focused.
- 05
Kundala Lake side (east of town)
Best for: Scenic lake views and resort-style stays
A few resorts on the lakeside with calm water views. Beautiful for photographs and evening walks. Away from town activity; you depend on a car for meals out.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Munnar
- Altitude of 1,600m means some people feel light-headed or short of breath for the first day or two. Consult your doctor before travelling if you have heart or breathing concerns. Drink water and move slowly on arrival.
- Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi involve a steep half-hour climb for the full experience. If this is too much, the lower tea-garden walks and viewpoints are equally rewarding and entirely level.
- Tea estate walks are on uneven ground but flat. Wear proper walking shoes with grip, not flip-flops. The trails are easy if you take them slowly.
- Choose a hotel with a lift if mobility is a concern. Central Munnar has smaller buildings with stairs; resorts are more likely to have ground-floor rooms or lifts.
