The short answer

House of Jagat Seth: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you like social and economic history. It is a small, dusty museum rather than a grand sight, so go with realistic expectations and check that it is open.

History and context

The story behind House of Jagat Seth

The Jagat Seth family were Jain bankers who moved to Bengal. Hiranand Shah, an Oswal from Nagaur in Rajasthan, founded the house after reaching Patna in 1652, and in 1713 Manik Chand received the Jagat Seth title from Farrukhsiyar. The last family member died in 1912.

The house is listed as a state-protected monument, and the privately managed museum was established in 1980.

Why it matters

Why House of Jagat Seth is worth your time

The Jagat Seth family were the great bankers of Bengal in the Nawabi era. In 1713 the Mughal emperor gave Manik Chand the title that translates as banker or merchant of the world. Their loans and credit supported the Nawabs, and their financial power was compared to the Rothschilds in Europe.

Seeing their house changes the way you read Murshidabad. The palaces show who held power, but the Mahimapur house shows who paid for it, and why the family's involvement in the events of 1757 mattered.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start in the compound and look at the layout of the house, temple and ruins. The Jagat Seth family were bankers of extraordinary reach, and the buildings show the scale of a household that served as a treasury as well as a home.

Inside the small museum, expect cases of old coins, textiles and family possessions. The house also has a reported underground chamber and passage, but ask before you assume you can enter. Items on display are old and the labelling can be thin, so a guide helps.

Give yourself time to sit in the temple courtyard for a few minutes. It is a quiet end to the visit, and it helps to remember that this is a place where a very large share of Bengal's money once passed.
