The short answer

Nag Tibba Trek: what visitors should know first

Go for a gentle first Himalayan trek or a winter snow weekend. Allow two to three days from Pantwari, with a night camped near the Nag Devta temple. It is one of the easier treks in Garhwal but still a steady climb. Not for anyone with heart, lung or knee problems.

History and context

The story behind Nag Tibba Trek

Nag Tibba, at about 3,022 m, is the highest peak of the Lesser Himalaya in the Garhwal division and gives its name to the Nag Tibba range. Villagers visit the Nag Devta temple near the top to pray for the protection of their cattle.

Why it matters

Why Nag Tibba Trek is worth your time

Nag Tibba is close enough to Mussoorie and Dehradun for a long weekend, which makes it a good first taste of Himalayan trekking. The forest and grassy slopes near the summit give a real sense of height without the risks of very high altitude.

The Nag Devta temple is a working shrine for the surrounding villages, who come to pray for their animals. Treat it with respect and keep the camping ground clean.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The trek starts at Pantwari, a village about 90 km from Dehradun by road, reached via Mussoorie in roughly three to four hours. From Pantwari the trail climbs through village fields and forest to the main campsite near the Nag Devta temple, a walk of about 5 to 8 km that takes most people four to five hours.

On the second morning, walk up to the summit, about 2 to 3 km beyond the camp. On a clear day the top, at about 3,022 m (9,915 ft), looks out to the Bandarpunch range towards Yamunotri. Return to camp and descend to Pantwari the same day, or stay a second night.

In winter the upper trail is often under snow, which makes it slower and colder; carry good layers and shoes with grip. Avoid the monsoon months, when the trail is muddy and views are rare.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start from Pantwari in the morning
  • Book a guide or operator for the camp
  • Carry warm layers, especially in winter
  • Avoid the monsoon months
  • Carry all litter back down
