Sir George Everest was the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843 and led the Great Trigonometric Survey, one of the most ambitious mapping projects of the 19th century. The highest mountain, first called Peak XV in the survey, was later named after him. His work laid the foundation for modern maps of the Indian subcontinent.
The house and museum show the connection between Mussoorie and India's scientific and colonial history. Everest came to Mussoorie for the cool climate and the views, and it served as a base for his survey work.
