How to experience it

If you are able, rent a rowboat from Mallital (the main bazaar) and go to the middle of the lake. From the water you see the full amphitheatre of hills, and the two Naina peaks that frame the western end. In monsoon the water level rises visibly, and thunderstorms roll across the ridge. In winter, early mornings are so still that the reflection looks painted.
Walk to Land's End on the southern point for a different perspective, or hire a boatman to take you to the Naina Devi Temple landing if the hill walk feels too much. Allow extra time and bring a book; the lake rewards sitting and watching.
