Why it matters
Why Siddheshwar Temple, Hottal is worth your time
Hottal gives a sense of how far Nanded district's history extends: a Kalyani Chalukya centre with temples older than the Sikh and Mughal layers that dominate the city. For anyone interested in Deccan temple architecture, it is among the best sites in the district.
It is also a reminder that restoration matters; the archaeology department's work has recovered carvings that were close to being lost. Because few outside visitors come, the site remains quiet, and you can study the carving at your own pace, which is rare for temples of this age and quality in the Deccan.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan a full day: the district site says Hottal is about 105 km from Nanded and 12 km southwest of Deglur. Arrive in the morning, when the light is soft on the carvings.
The temple is built in the Hemadpanti style on a star-shaped plan, with walls and pillars carved with Shiva Tandava, dancing Ganesha, goddesses and apsaras. Three Kalyani Chalukya inscriptions dated 1070, 1103 and 1120 record donations, suggesting the temples are older than 1070.
Other temples in the village are in ruins but protected, and the state archaeology department has restored parts of the Siddheshwar complex. Spend an hour, then head back or continue to Deglur. Carry water and a hat, as shade at the site is limited. A local guide, if one is available, can point out carvings that are easy to miss, such as the apsaras high on the pillars.
