The short answer

Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy quiet, arid landscapes and sightings by chance. The chinkara are the draw, but facilities are minimal and entry arrangements are not published, so plan a drive with a local driver and confirm with the forest office.

History and context

The story behind Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary

The sanctuary was notified in April 1981 at about 766 sq km. A de-notification in 1993 was overturned by the Gujarat High Court in 1995, after which the state reduced the area by more than 40% to about 444 sq km.

Why it matters

Why Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary is worth your time

This is one of the last stretches of intact arid grassland in Kutch, a landscape that has shrunk as farms, mining and invasive scrub have advanced. It protects chinkara, caracal and a rich bird community, and has been discussed as habitat for rare species such as the great Indian bustard and lesser florican.

It also sits beside one of the holiest lakes in Gujarat, so pilgrims and wildlife share the same ground. The sanctuary's status has had a complicated history, which is why the area is both valuable and fragile.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat the sanctuary as a slow drive through open country. Ask your driver to take you along tracks where chinkara are usually seen, and go at first or last light, when animals move into the open and the heat is bearable. Chinkara, or Indian gazelle, are the flagship species, with estimates of around 1,200 to 1,500 animals, and you will often see small groups bounding across the scrub.

The vegetation is desert thorn forest and dry savannah, with gorad and babul trees, and an invasive mesquite that is spreading. Keep an eye on the sky and the bushes, because the area has recorded 161 bird species including 19 raptors, as well as caracal, desert cat, wolf, striped hyena and red fox, though most of these are shy and nocturnal.

Do not leave the vehicle near wildlife, keep voices down, and take all litter with you. Combine the drive with a visit to the lake and Koteshwar, and keep the final leg for sunset on the sea cliff.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm entry rules with the forest department
  • Travel with a driver who knows the tracks
  • Carry water and a hat
  • Go in the early morning or late afternoon
  • Take all litter away
