The short answer

Thanedar and Kotgarh apple orchards: what visitors should know first

History and context

The story behind Thanedar and Kotgarh apple orchards

Sources agree that apples grew in Kotgarh before Stokes, from the 1870s and 1880s near the mission school, but the early varieties were sour. Stokes began his orchards in 1916; by 1928 apples from his orchards were sold in Shimla. His Golden Delicious saplings reached the orchard while he was in jail, and his wife Agnes planted them. Published accounts differ on some dates.

Why it matters

Why Thanedar and Kotgarh apple orchards is worth your time

The Kotgarh–Thanedar belt is described in Wikipedia as the prime apple area of Himachal Pradesh. Apples grew here before the twentieth century, but the early English varieties were sour and sold poorly. Samuel Evans Stokes, an American who settled here, began orchards in 1916 and encouraged local farmers by distributing saplings, helping shift the economy towards fruit.

Stokes did not introduce apples to India, as is sometimes said, but his promotion of Golden Delicious and of marketing made apple farming a livelihood in the region. For visitors, the area shows how a single crop shaped village life, and it is a calm place for slow travel.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Think of this as a drive-and-walk loop rather than a single sight. From Narkanda, head down towards Thanedar, a small one-street village, then continue towards Kotgarh. Pick one or two orchards to visit, ideally arranged through a hotel or retreat, and ask permission before walking in. In harvest season, which runs through the rains, accounts mention that visitors can pick apples with a basket.

Between stops, walk a short stretch of the old road or a village lane. The slopes are steep, so choose short loops. The views over the Sutlej valley are best in clear weather. At Thanedar, a retreat or guest house can offer tea and sometimes home-made jams and chutneys.

Combine the orchards with Tani Jubbar Lake, Parmajyoti Mandir and St Mary's Church at Kotgarh. Leave Narkanda by mid-morning and return by late afternoon, as hill roads are slow in rain or fog. For blossom, April is the time; for fruit, August to October. In winter the trees are bare and the area is quiet.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
