Area by area

Negombo neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Porutota Road and the beach strip

Best for: Resort stays, Ayurveda retreats and easy beach access

Good to know: Home to Jetwing Blue and Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions, with quiet gardens by night and some touts on the beach. Good for a short stay near the airport.

  2. 02

    Lewis Place

Best for: Budget guesthouses and walking to restaurants

Good to know: Wikivoyage lists several simple guesthouses here. Tuk-tuk drivers wait in numbers, so agree fares first. Check reviews and air-conditioning before booking.

Sights in this area: Negombo Beach

  3. 03

    Town centre and Grand Street

Best for: Churches, the canal and the fish market

Good to know: Close to St. Mary's Church and the lagoon. Busier and noisier, with fewer resorts; useful for sightseeing rather than for beach time.

  4. 04

    Katunayake and the airport belt

Best for: Very early flights or late arrivals

Good to know: Airport hotels are practical for short layovers. Atmosphere is limited, so for a leisurely stay choose Porutota Road instead.

Hotels we have written about

Hotels in Negombo for families and seniors

  1. 01

    Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions

Ethukale, Porutota Road, Negombo · Ayurveda retreat · Price band: ₹₹₹

A garden retreat on Porutota Road built around Ayurveda programmes, with on-site doctors, a pharmacy, yoga and a vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Suits travellers who want a quiet, health-led stay near the airport.

For older travellers: Garden pavilions are low-rise and spread out, so some walking is likely. Ask about ground-floor rooms and distances to the dining room and treatment areas. Confirm lift, step-free access and room grab rails directly with the hotel.

  2. 02

    Jetwing Blue

Ethukala, Porutota Road, Negombo · Beach resort · Price band: ₹₹₹₹

A beachfront hotel on Porutota Road that markets itself as Negombo's only five-star property, with two pools and several restaurants. A comfortable base for a short airport-side stay.

For older travellers: The official site lists rooms for differently abled guests and several room sizes; a lift is not mentioned on the page, so ask. Walking distances within a beach resort can be long in the heat.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
