Why it matters
Why Kurumba Maldives is worth your time
Kurumba matters because it is where Maldivian resort tourism began. Wikipedia records its opening on 3 October 1972 and credits Maldivians Mohamed Umar Maniku and Ahmed Naseem among its founders, and the resort calls itself the country's first private resort. Tourism has since grown into the country's largest industry, so staying here is a small way of seeing where that began.
It also shows what the older resort model looks like: a whole island run by one operator, where you leave the guesthouse questions of dress and alcohol behind. That suits many Indian families, but it is not the whole Maldives, so consider pairing a stay with a day on a local island.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Think of Kurumba as a resort you choose for its simplicity and short transfer rather than for a long list of activities. The resort's own site describes a chef-led restaurant over the water called Thila, a Japanese counter called Hamakaze and an all-day venue called Kandu. Wikipedia lists eight restaurants in total, so ask which are open in your month.
If you avoid meat, fish, egg, onion or garlic, write to the resort before booking. The pages we opened mention no vegetarian, Jain or Indian menu, and we cannot confirm one, so a written reply from the kitchen is the safest planning step. Ask whether a vegetarian or Jain-style menu can be arranged for a longer stay.
For older travellers, the island's closeness to Malé is the point. A short boat ride means less time sitting in transfers, and it means a doctor and hospital are easier to reach than from a far atoll. Even so, buy travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, since the fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé only.
