Why it matters

Why Godhosh and Beniadhus Waterfalls is worth your time

Waterfalls are the plateau's most memorable scenery. The Sunabeda forest is reported to hold about a dozen falls, fed by streams that join the Jonk, and they are among the least-visited in Odisha.

Seeing them also explains the landscape. The plateau is the source of the Jonk River, which feeds the Patora dam downstream, so the falls connect the remote forest with the irrigated plains of the district. For visitors willing to make the effort, they offer scenery and quiet that few other places in western Odisha can match.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat the falls as the goal of a full day inside the sanctuary, not a roadside stop. Start by checking with the forest division about access, then hire a local guide from the plateau villages who knows the tracks. Travellers report that the first two falls can be reached by motorbike but not by an ordinary four-wheeler, and that some distance has to be covered on foot.

Godhosh is described by the district tourism page as about 63 m high, falling through dense forest. Beniadhus lies on the Jonk River, which rises on the plateau and drains the northern half of the forest; the river runs through forest around it. Both are most impressive in and just after the monsoon, when the Jonk is full, but the tracks are also at their worst then, so late September to November is the compromise.

Take plenty of water, food and a torch, wear sturdy footwear and avoid swimming at the foot of the falls. Leave in time to be out of the forest before dusk, and respect villagers whose land and grazing you pass.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrange a local guide and check with the forest division
  • Use a bike or sturdy vehicle; ordinary cars are unsuitable
