Plan 01

1 day in Nurpur

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, temples and a train stop

Start at Nurpur Fort in the morning, when the ruins are cool and quiet. Walk to the entrance gate, then the western edge for the view over the Jabbar stream, and finish in the Brij Raj Swami temple. Have lunch in town and rest through the heat. In the afternoon, drive about 6 km to Nagni Mata temple, then return via Nurpur Road station if you want to see the narrow-gauge line.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Nurpur Fort1 to 2 hoursModerateMorning, October to March; avoid the July and August downpours
Brij Raj Swami Temple20 to 40 minutesEasyMorning; Janmashtami for the fair, with larger crowds
Nagni Mata Temple30 to 45 minutesEasyWeekday mornings; Saturdays in Shravan and Bhadra for the fair

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Nurpur Fort: Paths inside are uneven, with broken stone, grass and some steps between terraces, and there is little seating or shade at the ruined end. The temple precinct is the easiest part. Take a walking stick if balance is uncertain, and avoid the middle of the day from April to June.

Plan 02

2 days in Nurpur

  1. 01

    Day 1: Nurpur's old capital

Spend the morning at Nurpur Fort and the Brij Raj Swami temple, and the afternoon at Nagni Mata. Keep the evening free for a stroll in the town and an early dinner.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Kangra valley excursion

Leave early for Kangra Fort, allowing two to three hours, then continue towards Masrur if energy allows. Ask your driver to confirm timings, and eat lunch in Kangra town before returning.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kangra Fort2 to 3 hoursDemandingMorning, October to March

Pace: Kangra Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kangra Fort: The route climbs through a long, narrow passage of gates with steps and slopes. It is hard for anyone with knee or heart problems, and there is little seating on the way up. Hot afternoons are tiring.

Pacing

Pacing a Nurpur trip for parents and children

  • Visit the fort in the morning; the ground is uneven and shade is limited.
  • Use a hired car for Nagni Mata, Kangra Fort and Masrur rather than local buses.
  • Ask about stairs and hot water before booking a hotel; options in town are basic.
  • Avoid April to June afternoons and the July to August rains.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medicines; chemists are in town but few specialist services.
  • If you want hospital cover, plan to stay in Pathankot or Kangra instead.
