Before you go
Osian with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit temples in the morning; the stone floors are hot underfoot by late morning, so carry socks or a thin cloth.
- Sachiya Mata has a long stairway; rest at the landings and descend slowly, or limit yourself to the lower levels.
- Choose a jeep or a short ride over a long camel trek if you have back, hip or knee problems.
- Carry water, a hat and any medication; shops and clinics in Osian are limited.
- Hire a car for the whole day from Jodhpur so you have a cool place to rest between stops.
- Book camp stays through a reputable operator and confirm bathroom and tent distances before you go.
Easiest first
Places in Osian sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Harihara Temples (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — The ground is mostly flat, though platforms and uneven stone make footing uncertain. There is little shade or seating, so keep the stop short in the heat.
- Osian Mahavira Jain Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour; longer on a festival day) — The temple stands on a raised platform and you climb a few steps to the porch, then walk on stone floors in bare feet, which can be hot by late morning. Seating is limited; the courtyard and halls are level and shaded in places.
- Osian Surya Temple (Places to visit · 15 to 20 minutes) — The site is small and mostly level, but the approach can be uneven and there is little shade or seating. Short stops suit older travellers well.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Osian Dunes and Camel Safari (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours for a sunset ride; overnight if staying at a camp) — Camels are mounted by kneeling, but the rise and sway can be uncomfortable for people with bad backs or hips. A jeep ride is gentler, and chairs or a camp terrace suit those who prefer to watch from the sand.
- Sachiya Mata Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours including the climb) — A long flight of steps leads up under decorated arches, and footwear must come off, so the stone can be hot. One visitor account calls it easier than it looks, but there are few places to sit. Consider a slow pace with rests, or a shorter visit to the lower levels.

Practical tips for Osian
- Heat. From April to June, temperatures often exceed 40 degrees and stone floors become painful. Plan temple visits for the first hours after opening.
- Footwear. Shoes come off at the temples. Carry socks or a thin cloth for stone, and a bag for your footwear.
- Dress. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, especially at the Jain and goddess temples.
- Getting around. A private car from Jodhpur is the practical option. Agree hours and waiting time in advance, as Osian has few taxis of its own.
- Money. Carry some cash for small shops, tips and donation boxes; card and UPI acceptance outside camps and larger shops is patchy.
- Photography. Ask before photographing inside sanctums or of worshippers, and do not climb on ruined temples.
- Festivals. Navratri brings large crowds to Sachiya Mata. Visit on another day if you prefer quiet.
- Facilities. Facilities are limited, so carry water, snacks and any medication, and book a camp or hotel before you arrive.
