Plan 01

1 day in Pachmarhi

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves, waterfall and sunset

Spend the morning at the Pandav Caves, walking among the five rock shelters that legend ties to the Mahabharata exiles. Stop at the Jata Shankar Cave, a smaller cavern near the main group, on the way back. Have lunch at your hotel or a local café. In the early afternoon, drive to Bee Fall, a modest waterfall with a forested approach; the short walk is gentle and the pool is clear. As light softens, head to Priyadarshini Point or Captain's Garden for a view over the valleys. Return to the town for an evening walk through the quiet cantonment and dinner.

Plan 02

2 days in Pachmarhi

  1. 01

    Day 1: Caves and waterfalls

Begin at the Pandav Caves, spending an hour or more inside and around the five shelters. Visit Jata Shankar Cave and the smaller Reechgarh Cave on the same route. Have lunch back in town, then drive to Bee Fall in the afternoon. Walk to the pool and rest by the water. As the afternoon cools, stop at Apsara Vihar Pool, a scenic bathing pool favoured by locals, on your way back. End with a walk around the cantonment and dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Dhupgarh sunrise and forest viewpoints

Leave before dawn to drive to the Dhupgarh car park at the highest point in Madhya Pradesh (1,352 metres). The final walk is short but steep; take your time. Watch the sunrise spread across the valleys below. Return for breakfast, then visit the Church of the Annunciation, a colonial structure from 1857 with Belgian stained-glass windows, and the nearby Forsyth Library, a heritage building. Spend the afternoon at Captain's Garden or Sat Pula for leisurely walks and views. End with evening tea and a quiet dinner.

Plan 03

3 days in Pachmarhi

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves and the cantonment

Start with the Pandav Caves, exploring all five shelters and the smaller caves nearby. Spend time at Jata Shankar and Reechgarh as well. Have lunch at a local café, then walk around the cantonment, visiting the Church of the Annunciation, Forsyth Library and the old Powder Magazine (now a small museum). The cantonment is quieter in the afternoon, so this is a good time to understand the colonial history. End with an evening stroll and early dinner.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Waterfalls and pools

Drive to Bee Fall for a morning walk and a swim if the season is right. Then visit Apsara Vihar Pool, followed by Cherry Pool, two scenic spots favoured by locals. Have lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon, explore Sat Pula, a series of shallow pools and rock formations, or visit Shakkar Pool if energy allows. Spend the late afternoon at Priyadarshini Point or Mahadeo Cave viewpoint watching light play on the valleys. Dinner in town.

  3. 03

Day 3: Dhupgarh and forest exploration

Another early start for Dhupgarh sunrise if weather permits, or a regular morning visit if the previous day's schedule was full. After Dhupgarh, drive to Mahadeo Falls (if the season has water) or to quieter spots like the Bhairongarh area for forest walks and temple ruins. In the afternoon, visit Captain's Garden, a peaceful spot with views and old colonial-era trees. Spend your last evening reflecting on the quiet of the plateau, then pack for departure.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Pachmarhi is at 1,067 metres, but the air is thinner; if a parent has heart or lung issues, consult a doctor before visiting and travel slowly on the first day.
  • Hire a car and driver for the full stay. Road curves are steep and narrow; walking to most sights from a car park is far safer than relying on public transport.
  • Dhupgarh sunrise is rewarding but involves an early start and a short steep walk from the car park. If mobility is a concern, wait for daylight and go at a slower pace, or skip it in favour of viewpoints accessible by car.
  • Caves have uneven floors and some steps. Visit the easier ones (Pandav Caves, Jata Shankar) first to gauge comfort. A walking stick or hiking pole is helpful.
  • The plateau is cool, but afternoon sun can still be strong. Carry sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and water. Dehydration at altitude is easy to miss.
  • Hotels with lifts and level access are few; ask explicitly about stairs and room location when booking. Many older colonial properties lack elevators.
