The short answer
Best areas to stay in Pahalgam
- 01
Pahalgam town centre (bazaar area)
Best for: Travellers who want easy access to shops, food and the starting point for yatra
Close to the main bazaar, Lidder River walks and local transport hubs. Hotels range from basic to mid-range. The town can be noisy during the yatra season (July–August) and very quiet (and sometimes closed) in winter. Good for families preparing for the trek.
- 02
Riverside hotels and lodges
Best for: Couples and those seeking quiet riverside settings
Several small hotels and guesthouses sit along the Lidder River, offering views and calm. A short walk or drive from the bazaar. Less convenient for daily shopping but more peaceful, especially outside the yatra season. Roads can be rough in places.
- 03
Aru Road area (towards Aru Valley)
Best for: Trekkers and those wanting to base from higher altitude
A few lodges sit on the road towards Aru Valley, offering cooler temperatures and mountain views. More remote; you will depend on a car for supplies. Good if you want to acclimatize above the main town.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Pahalgam
- Altitude (2,200 m) can cause shortness of breath or mild altitude sickness, especially in the first day or two. Do not rush; stay hydrated and avoid strenuous walks on arrival.
- The climate is cool year-round: carry warm layers, a good jacket and a hat even in summer. Winter is severe; many hotels close from November to March.
- Meadow walks to Baisaran and Betaab are level and gentle; trekking towards Amarnath or Kolahoi involves real climbing and should only be attempted with fitness and a doctor's approval.
- Hire a car and driver for day trips rather than walking between valleys or relying on local taxis. Roads are winding and can be slow, but a car offers a rest place.
