After lunch and a rest, drive to Malampuzha for the gardens and the dam, timing your visit for the softer light of late afternoon.

Leave early and drive towards Nenmara. Stop at Pothundi Dam, then continue up into the Nelliampathy hills for viewpoints and plantation country. Allow generous time for the road in both directions.

With parents at Nelliampathy Hills: The drive is long with many bends, which can cause car sickness. Viewpoints may involve short walks and uneven steps.

Day 3: Malampuzha, or a forest day
Either keep it light with Malampuzha and Jainimedu, or, with advance arrangements, make a full day of Silent Valley or Parambikulam. Do not try to combine the two forest areas in one trip.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Palakkad trip for parents and children
- Do Palakkad Fort and Kalpathy in the early morning or late afternoon; midday heat from February to May is tiring even for fit visitors.
- Hire a car with a driver for Malampuzha, Nelliampathy and the forest areas; local buses will cost you time and comfort.
- The Nelliampathy road climbs through hairpin bends. If anyone gets car-sick, take medication beforehand and keep stops frequent.
- The Dhoni trek is a guided walk of several hours. It is not for anyone with knee or breathing problems; choose Malampuzha instead.
- Forest areas such as Silent Valley and Parambikulam control entry and numbers. Confirm access and any bookings with the forest department well before travel.
- Heat: March and April are the hottest months, with daily highs around 37 degrees. Do sightseeing before 10 am and after 4 pm, and carry water.
