Drive east to Baijnath to see the 1204 Shiva temple before the crowds, then continue a few kilometres west to Tashi Jong monastery. Return for a long lunch and a rest, and spend the late afternoon at Saurabh Van Vihar for a gentle lakeside walk.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Palampur trip for parents and children

  • Hire a car and driver for the whole stay. Distances are short, but public transport is slow and infrequent between sights.
  • Plan one main stop in the morning and rest after lunch. Winters are cold and the town is hilly, so carry warm layers from November to March.
  • Choose a hotel with ground-floor rooms or a lift; many hillside and heritage stays have stairs.
  • Temples and monasteries involve removing shoes and sitting on the floor. Ask for a chair, and carry socks for hot stone in summer.
  • Avoid July and August, when heavy rain and landslides can disrupt roads and hide the views.
  • Carry your regular medicines and keep the nearest hospital's location handy; services in a small town are limited.
