Why it matters
Why Backwater Kayaking and Canacona Island is worth your time
Palolem's shallow bay and sheltered water are what make it good for gentle activities, and the backwater at the north end shows another side of the place: mangroves, hills and birds a few minutes from the beach.
Canacona Island also gives the beach its landmark, a small wooded island sitting off the northern end. Paddling towards it is one of the most direct ways to see the bay from the sea, and one of the calmer things to do on a morning when the beach is still quiet.

How to experience it
At the north end of Palolem, kayak operators hire single and tandem boats on the sand. A backwater channel runs inland behind the beach, flanked by hills and mangroves, and the same boats can be paddled towards Canacona Island, also known as Monkey Island or Green Island.
Go early, when the water is calm and the light is soft. Ask for a lifejacket, agree the time and price before you push off, and keep to the channel. Access to the island depends on the tide, since you can sometimes walk across at low tide, and a boat is needed at high tide, so check before setting out.
Do not feed or handle the monkeys, and keep a respectful distance from birdlife. Water sports stop in the monsoon, and swimming is not permitted then, so this is a dry-season activity.
Plan with confidence
