The short answer
Best areas to stay in Pangong Tso
- 01
Pangong Tso itself (main parking area and roadside lodges)
Best for: Photographers and nature lovers who want to wake at the lake
A handful of very basic guesthouses and home-stays cluster around the main parking area on the Indian side. Rooms are simple, heated by small stoves, with squat toilets and cold water. The views are extraordinary, and you can walk to the water in minutes. Expect no electricity after dark, no hot water, and limited food. Book well in advance in peak season. This is camping-level comfort in a guesthouse building.
- 02
Korzok village (40–60 kilometres east along the lake)
Best for: Travellers who want a less crowded experience and a monastery visit
A small, high-altitude village with a 14th-century monastery and a few guesthouses. More isolated than the main lake, fewer tourists, and a stronger sense of the local Changpa (nomadic herding) culture. The road from the main lake to Korzok is rough and takes 1.5–2 hours. Medical help is even further away. Only attempt this if your driver knows the route and your health is excellent.
- 03
Leh (as a base for day trips)
Best for: Travellers who want comfort and prefer not to stay at the lake
A 4–5 hour drive each way. You miss the sunrise at the lake, but you have a hot shower, proper meals, and medical care. Leh has many hotels in all price ranges. This is the safer, easier option for older travellers or those unsure of their altitude tolerance.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Pangong Tso
- Consult your doctor before going, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or respiratory conditions. Pangong Tso is at 4,225 metres; the passes are over 5,000 metres. Altitude sickness can be serious.
- Arrive in Leh 2–3 days before Pangong Tso to acclimatize. Spend time resting, walking gently, and drinking water. This makes a huge difference.
- Do not climb or walk far on the first day. Sit by the water, rest, and let your body adjust. Overexertion at altitude can trigger sickness.
- Stay at Leh and do Pangong Tso as a day trip or 2-day trip if your health makes altitude concerning. The comfort and medical access are worth the drive.
