The short answer

Kalesar National Park: what visitors should know first

Go if you want a wildlife morning away from the shrines. It is across the border in Haryana, about 15 km away, and closed from July to September. Safaris use pre-registered jeeps, and private vehicles are restricted, so book through the park or an operator.

History and context

The story behind Kalesar National Park

Wikipedia describes the park as covering about 53 square kilometres, adjacent to a wildlife sanctuary of similar size, on both sides of the Yamunanagar-Paonta Sahib road. It lies in Haryana's Yamunanagar district.

The article notes jeep safaris on three tracks and a closure from July to September. Historical details of its designation are not covered in the source checked.

Why it matters

Why Kalesar National Park is worth your time

Kalesar protects a stretch of Shivalik forest that links the Himachal foothills with the plains. A 2016 camera-trap survey, noted in Wikipedia, recorded 19 mammal species including 42 leopards, which indicates how healthy the habitat is.

For travellers whose itinerary is mostly pilgrimage, it provides a different kind of morning, outdoors in a forest rather than in a hall. The park lies on both sides of the Yamunanagar-Paonta Sahib road, so the forest is easy to reach.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book a jeep safari through the park authorities or a registered operator the day before if possible. Wikipedia notes three safari tracks, and that private vehicles on those routes must be pre-registered with the wildlife department.

Plan for an early slot, as the animals are most active in the first hours after the park opens. Wear muted colours, carry water and a light jacket in winter, and keep quiet in the forest. Wikipedia lists leopards, elephants, sambar, chital, nilgai, wild boar and langurs among the species, but sightings of big cats are rare.

Because the park is in Haryana, not Himachal, carry ID and check the current rules on both sides. Combine it with a morning at the gurdwara by starting the safari early and returning to Paonta Sahib for lunch.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a safari in advance
  • Check the July-September closure
  • Carry ID and layers
  • Do not expect guaranteed sightings
