The short answer

Doli (palanquin) up Parasnath Hill: what visitors should know first

If anyone in your group is over about 65, has knee or heart concerns, or is travelling with small children, plan on a doli. Arrange it in Madhuban the day before, agree the price and route in advance, and still keep some food, water and an escort walking alongside.

Why it matters

Why Doli (palanquin) up Parasnath Hill is worth your time

The doli is part of how Shikharji works. For generations it has allowed grandparents and the infirm to complete a pilgrimage they might not otherwise make, and it has given local carriers, many from nearby Adivasi villages, a livelihood tied to the hill. Jain communities say that Adivasi people have traditionally carried pilgrims up the hill, and the practice continues.

For a modern family it is also the practical answer to a hard question: how do you take a parent who cannot climb nine kilometres to a place they have always wanted to see? Done sensibly, with rest days and a companion, it makes the yatra possible for people who would otherwise stay in Madhuban.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Agree terms first

Settle price, distance covered and the return arrangement before leaving Madhuban, not on the slope.

  2. 02

    Keep a companion

One family member should stay close to the doli the whole way, with water and a light meal.

  3. 03

    Descent comfort

Going down can be harder on a seated passenger than going up, so ask about the return plan.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start the arrangements the evening before. Ask your dharamshala or kothi office in Madhuban which doli operators they recommend, and confirm how many carriers will go with each passenger, where they will take you, whether the price covers the full circuit or just the climb to the first tonk, and how the return works. Agree the amount clearly and, if you can, take a witness from your group. Rates are not fixed in any source we could find, so expect to negotiate.

The carriers move on a concrete-paved track that is mostly steps after the first few kilometres. Passengers sit upright and are carried by porters, who change shifts along the way. Dress warmly for the early start, as the ridge is windier and cooler than Madhuban, and carry a shawl, a water bottle and a light snack. You will get down at each tonk to pray, and the carriers wait.

Sit comfortably, keep your hands inside and stay alert on steep sections. Many families walk the easy first stretch with the doli and keep a family member close. Tip fairly, and do not argue over small amounts at the top: the work is heavy.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrange the doli the evening before through your kothi or dharamshala
  • Agree price, route and return in advance and ask for a clear estimate
  • Carry a shawl, water and a light snack for the ridge
  • Keep a family member within sight at all times
  • Check with a doctor before undertaking a long day on the hill

A doli removes the climb, but you still sit for many hours, the track is steep with steps, and the descent can feel as uncomfortable as the climb. Ask carriers how far they will take you, and keep a companion with you at all times.
Tickets and access
Doli carriers are hired informally in Madhuban. A pilgrim guide advises arranging dolis the day before for elders and children. Current rates and weight-based pricing are not published online, so confirm the price, the route and the return with the carriers or your kothi office before you set off.
