Why it matters

Why Jal Mandir, Shikharji is worth your time

The temple is the one major structure on a ridge of small footprint shrines, and many pilgrims regard it as the emotional centre of the circuit. Its setting among spring-fed pools is unusual in a dry hill landscape.

It also shows the continuing community investment in the site: Jain sources record that the Jal Mandir and its subsidiary shrines were installed under a Shwetambara acharya, and earlier consecration work in 1825 by the Jagat Seth family included a Jal Mandir.

How to experience it

The Jal Mandir is a temple in the lap of the hills, surrounded on three sides by natural pools fed by a spring. It lies close to the 19th tonk on the usual numbering and is itself counted as Tonk 20. Pilgrims on the standard route reach it after walking the eastern ridge.

Pilgrim guides note that bathing and washing facilities are available here, together with a dak bungalow and the Chopda Kund, and that puja requires appropriate attire. Many pilgrims bathe, change into fresh clothes and then enter. There is a Parshvanatha idol rather than footprints.

Use the stop to rest. Sit in the shade, eat what you carried, and refill your water before the climb west towards the Parasnath tonk. If you have a doli, this is also a natural time to check in with your carriers.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Carry a change of clothes if you plan to bathe before puja
  • Eat and rest in the shade nearby
  • Refill water before heading west
  • Keep your visit quiet and unhurried
