History and context
The story behind Shri Kali Devi Temple
Maharaja Bhupinder Singh commissioned the temple in 1936, and published sources differ on whether completion was 1936 or 1938. He is said to have brought a six-foot statue of Kali and a sacred flame from Bengal.

Why it matters
Why Shri Kali Devi Temple is worth your time
The temple was commissioned by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh in 1936 (some sources give 1938 for completion), at a time when Patiala was among the grandest of the Punjab princely states. Kali is the family deity of many local families, and the temple became a focal point of Hindu worship in a city whose rulers were Sikh.
That mixture is typical of Patiala. Visitors of different faiths come here, and the temple stands a few minutes from the city's major gurdwaras and its royal monuments. Seeing it alongside Dukh Nivaran Sahib gives a fuller sense of the city's religious life.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Arrive early or around evening prayers, when the temple is at its liveliest without being overwhelming. Leave shoes at the stand, cover shoulders and knees, and follow the queue towards the main shrine of Maa Kali. The idol, a six-foot figure reported to have been brought from Bengal along with a sacred flame, is the focus of worship.
Take a few minutes in the courtyard to watch the rhythm of the place: families bringing offerings, priests conducting prayers and visitors of different backgrounds standing side by side. The complex includes other shrines, including a Hanuman shrine, and a sacred pool.
If you visit during the nine days of Navratri, expect large crowds and long queues, and plan more time and patience. Otherwise it is a calm stop that fits naturally beside Baradari Gardens, directly across the road.
