Natha Top, Patnitop: History, highlights and visitor guide

A high ridge off the Sanasar road with long views toward the Kishtwar range and the Brammah massif. Best on a clear morning; it is a viewpoint, not a climb.

The short answer

Natha Top: what visitors should know first

Yes, if the sky is clear. Go in the morning, tell the driver the way, and expect a short walk from where the road ends. Skip it in cloud or heavy rain, when there is little to see. Altitude sources vary, so rely on the view, not the number.

Why it matters

Why Natha Top is worth your time

Natha Top is one of the few spots near Patnitop where the horizon opens fully to the high Himalaya. The highway and the hotels sit in pine forest with limited views; from the ridge, you see why the plateau became a stopping point for travellers between the plains and Kashmir.

The setting also explains the area's adventure side. Wide, open slopes and steady air currents make the ridge a natural place for paragliding, and Incredible India lists the area for winter sport. The experience for most visitors is simpler: a quiet hour with a view and a flask of tea.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Kishtwar skyline

On a clear day Incredible India names peaks in the Brammah massif, including Flat Top, Arjuna and Brammah I and II.

  2. 02

    Open ridge

Unlike the forested town, the ridge gives a wide sky and a sense of altitude.

  3. 03

    Winter snow

The top is reported to stay snow-covered in winter, though local conditions vary year to year.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Natha Top is reached by taking the Sanasar road northwest from Patnitop's main chowk and turning left about 9 km along, just before an air force unit, according to Outlook Traveller. From the turning, it is a further 4 km. A driver who knows the area will save you the guesswork, and it helps to ask before you set out because signage is limited.

Once on top, the reward is the sweep of the Kishtwar range. Incredible India names the Brammah massif, including Flat Top, Arjuna and Brammah I and II, as visible on a clear day. Come early, before haze and cloud build, and carry a jacket because wind picks up quickly. Take binoculars if you have them.

Plan it with Sanasar rather than as a separate trip: the road continues beyond the turn-off, so a morning at Natha Top followed by lunch at the meadow makes an unhurried half-day. In winter, Incredible India says the top stays snow-covered, but check road status first.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask your driver for the turn-off before the air force unit
  • Go early; haze and cloud build later
  • Carry a windproof layer and wear grip shoes
  • Check road and snow conditions in winter
