The short answer
Jambulinga and Kadasiddheshvara Temples: what visitors should know first
Take ten minutes for them as part of the main walk. They are small and plain, but they show the northern style at an early stage. Keep your energy for Virupaksha, and look here for the carved figures on the outer walls.
History and context
The story behind Jambulinga and Kadasiddheshvara Temples
The ASI dates both temples to the mid-7th century, while Michell prefers the early 8th. Neither temple names a firm patron in the sources consulted.
A small, east-facing Chandrashekhara temple stands nearby with a Nandi platform; it has no tower and is dated variously between the 8th and 10th centuries.

Why it matters
Why Jambulinga and Kadasiddheshvara Temples is worth your time
These two small temples show the northern curvilinear tower in an early stage on Chalukya soil, which is the point of Pattadakal's listing: a place where builders tried both traditions. The Jambulinga in particular experiments with a projecting bay in front of the sanctum, a feature that later temples refined.
They are also useful because their dating is genuinely uncertain, with scholars placing them from the mid-7th to the early 8th century. That honesty about doubt is worth carrying through the rest of the site: many dates here are informed estimates, not facts carved into stone.

How to experience it
Walk north once you have finished with the larger temples. Kadasiddheshvara and Jambulinga stand close together, both modest in size. Both have the curved tower of the northern tradition, and both are dated either to the mid-7th century by the ASI or the early 8th by the scholar George Michell.
At Kadasiddheshvara, look for the carved figures on the outer walls, among them Ardhanarishvara, Harihara and Lakulisha. These are some of the clearest examples of Shaiva iconography in the group. At Jambulinga, note the experiment with a projecting porch bay, and the raised Nandi platform, now in ruins.
Both are good for photographing against the larger temples behind. Stay only as long as you want; the two together rarely take more than twenty minutes, and their value is as a comparison with the heavier southern temples.
